What effective Christian leadership is

accountability in christian leadership

There is no better example of a Christian leader than Jesus Christ. He said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep'' (John 10:11). This is where we see the perfect description of a Christian leader. He tends his “sheep” like a shepherd. Care, guidance and helping people most in need is the main responsibility for Christian leaders.

What Christian Leadership Means

As a shepherd of God's flock, a leader guides others, showing godliness and righteousness in his life and encouraging to follow his example. The Church speaks about Christian leadership this way: a leader is the one who guides, feeds, nourishes, comforts, corrects and protects. The greatest example we should follow is Christ Himself.

The apostle Paul writes in his letter, “Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11: 1). The concept of a Christian leader is quite simple – he is the one who follows Christ and inspires others to follow Him.

A Christian leader is also a provider who gives the best “food for the sheep” - the Word of God. Just as a shepherd leads his flock to green pastures for growing and prosperity, so a Christian leader feeds his flock with the food that makes Christians strong. The Bible, not psychology or world wisdom, is spiritual food for the health of Christians. “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord” (Deuteronomy 8: 3).

A Christian leader comforts the sheep, bandages their wounds, applying a balm of compassion and love. Just as a shepherd takes a straying sheep back to his fold with the help of his staff, so a Christian leader corrects and disciplines people, he cares about when they get lost.

Jesus warned us, “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.”(Matthew 7:15). Christian leadership and leaders must protect believers against false teachings that lead them astray. Salvation is in Christ alone.

What the Bible says about accountability Christian leadership development

According to God's plan for the church, leadership is defined as a process by which a leader influences other people through his humble, loving service. Christian ministry leadership is all about serving, not domination. Those whom God calls leaders are humble servants, not the reigning monarchs and brilliant celebrities, but working servants. Those who want to lead God's people must first of all serve as examples of sacrifice, devotion, obedience, and humility. Christian leadership means the following: a good leader is the one who seeks the Lord and follows Him.

We have one great advantage that Jesus is our role model. We are called to grow and develop Christian leadership daily to become more Christlike. Jesus was the ultimate servant leader. He equipped his people so they could become mature and reach their full potential for the purposes of God's Kingdom. The Christian leader's task is to become a Christ-centered servant leader.

What qualities of a Christian leader are

1. Love

“God is love” (1 John 4: 8), and “God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us” (Romans 5: 5).

Love is considered central in Christian faith. Love is the reason why Jesus came to earth and had to die to save mankind from sin. Any Christian leader in his life should be guided by the love of God in everything he does.

2. Humbleness

Proverbs 16: 5 says that the Lord detests all the proud of heart. Being arrogant is not the way to reveal Christ.

3. Motivation

Good leaders motivate others. When we mentor people for our benefit, we manipulate and exploit them. But when we call people to achieve higher goals, we motivate them to do the right things.

4. Correction

Giving correction to others is important for all Christians. Many passages in the Scripture speak about this principle,

“Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another...” (Hebrews 10: 24-25).

“Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome, but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth...” (2 Timothy 2: 23- 25).

Here are some tips for effective Christian leadership, when you correct others:

  • Understand their temperaments

  • Respect them

  • Believe in them

  • Support their dreams

  • Help them overcome their flaws

5. Honesty

Good leaders value honesty, being honest in thoughts, words and deeds, practicing what we preach with consistency and reliability, doing what we say so that others would trust us.
